IF you only read the questions you should ask on this page it may save you a lot of time wasting and money

Are you considering becoming an Instructor? Looking for a career change? Then read on. The following pages contain all the information you need to make an informed choice on training schools. If you have any queries or questions after reading through the web site or any comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please DO NOT be mislead from adverts that say "all you need is a driving licence" if this were true then the pass rate for part 3 would be a lot higher than 27%

You are required to have held a full licence for a minimum of 4 years & you must be over 21 years of age. The DSA (Driving Standards Agency) are responsible for all the examinations and registration and you will find a link to their site where more details on entry requirements can be found.

So WHAT makes a great instructor? Are you good dealing with people & explaining things, maybe more than twice? Are you reliable? Punctual? And self disciplined? Do you think you could cope with the attitude of other road users - especially towards L drivers? Many people think that the only requirement is a love of driving - remember you are going to be teaching driving to other road users NOT driving yourself - so being able to explain techniques clearly & patiently is paramount.

So in a nutshell you will need to be able to the following well to pass the required exams

  • Communicate
  • Teach
  • Be proactive - tell the pupil what you want them to do and NOT what you dont
  • Be patient and able to explain what the pupil is required to do and how to do it  ( for example move out a bit from the parked car is not clear --- how much is a bit??)

Exams & Training details

You will need to pass 3 exams to qualify these are

  • Part 1 - written test & hazard perception
  • Part 2 - Driving test
  • Part 3 - Test of ability to instruct

More details about the part 2 & 3 can be found on the relevant links.

Most trainees will take between 6 & 18 months to qualify. Be assured that it is almost impossible to qualify in "16" weeks. It can take 3 months to get an exam date and remember to add extra time if are working full time as you need to study & perhaps take time off to attend courses or exam dates.

It is in your interest to search around for the best training school for you. Many training establishments are in fact owned by the same company so be aware when calling and don't be afraid to ask. Many training schools ask you to part with all your money up front BEFORE you start training. Do you know who is going to train you? How long have they been qualified? Is the school ORDIT registered? if not you are unlikely to get a refund if you are unhappy with your training.

What if you don't pass the part 2? is a refund on part 3 training available and how much is it?

The next section gives information about us and the courses we offer - all trainees are required to have a 2.5 hour assessment before we will train you. This allows us to assess your ability and you to judge our training before parting with your money.

Questions to ask BEFORE parting with any up front money

Before you part with your hard earned cash - Especially if the training establishment ONLY do up front fees and do not do pay as you go

1) HOW many people are in the car when I train?  - Remember if there are 3 trainees and you are told you get 15 hours for the part 2 then you ONLY get 5 hours driving!!

2) What is the refund (get this in writing) if I dont pass the part 2?. Usually this is about 10% of what you paid so beware!!

3) How long do I have to wait to start training? Many trainees complain they have to wait several months after passing the part 2 to start the part 3 training

4) Will  I ALWAYS have the same trainer? It is recognised that it is much better to have the same trainer for the whole of part 2 or 3 - after all you would not change your L drivers ADI each week!

5) If I have to car share the training can I share with the same people each time? Usually this is not possible and you may not get along with all the other trainees

6) Very Important  - If you are offered a loan do NOT SIGN until you have checked the small print. You may be told that the loan is interest free until you qualify !! WHAT if you don't?? and will you have the 3/4K within the time frame stipulated?? If not you have to pay up to 29% interest often from the day you applied for the loan!!

7) How long has the trainer been doing the job? when did they qualify and what grade ADI are they? Do they have any other qualifications? Are they ORDIT registered? After all there is little point in paying to have a trainer who qualified 2 months ago and has never taught an L driver!

And finally - remember a lot of training schools employ sales reps to give the talk and are relying on "same day sign ups" as you get carried away with how "easy" it is to become an instructor. So

LEAVE YOUR CREDIT CARD AT HOME

FIND OUT about the training school  - call trading standards and check on the internet incase of complaints

NEVER SIGN ON THE DAY - its a lot of money so take 48 hours to think about spending it!

GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO THINK THINGS OVER

ASK FOR ANYTHING YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT IN WRITING OR TAPE THE CONVERSATION

DONT BE FOOLED BY A SAME DAY DISCOUNT!

HIGH PRESSURE SALES SHOULD GET YOUR ALARM BELLS RINGING

VISIT OR CALL AT LEAST 4 TRAINING ESTABLISHMENTS BEFORE DECIDING

And you can look on driving instructor forums and read up about the training establishment you are thinking about joining

After training ADI's for many years these are the common complaints and once you have paid you are very unlikely to get a refund
